As the Notting Hill Carnival approaches at the end of August, it is a celebration of Britain’s connections with Africa and the Caribbean. Many people believe that World War II was exclusively thought throughout Europe. Or course parts of the War were battled in North Africa from 10th June 1940 to 16th May 1943.
When Italy declared their involvement in the War the Allies crossed the border into Libya and captured the Italian Fort Capuzzo on the 14th June 1940. This began a long arduous battle between the two thought between Libya Tunisia and Egypt.
It is a shame that some people don’t take acknowledgement of the involvement of the Commonwealth in World War II when days like Victory for Europe (VE) Day imply the non involvement of Africa.
So take the upcoming Notting Hill Carnival on the 29th of August is a fitting occasion that celebrates the benefits that the Commonwealth has brought to the island of Great Britain.
